Bill provides increased autonomy and fair funding, increases high-quality options for students

Baltimore, MD—Today, Jenese Jones, interim executive director for MarylandCAN: The Maryland Campaign for Achievement Now, released the following statement in response to Gov. Hogan’s announcement of the Public Charter School Act of 2017:

“The Public Charter School Act of 2017 is a critical step toward ensuring a high-quality education for every Maryland student regardless of where he or she comes from. Policies that prioritize identifying and expanding high quality educational options and autonomy are critical to our state’s economic well being and future. We have seen gains across the country and, as a native Marylander, I am encouraged by the opportunity to continue this essential work in Maryland.

“MarylandCAN supports measures that provide parents and students true choice among a variety of high-quality traditional public and public charter options. In the coming weeks I’m excited to share more about the successes of public charter schools in Baltimore. This bill addresses the needs of Baltimore families and students across the state of Maryland. MarylandCAN strongly supports the Public Charter School Act of 2017 and looks forward to engaging partners across the state on this bill.”
