Ten years after Maryland's charter school law was enacted, more than 200 student, parents and teachers from charter schools around the state were in Annapolis today to urge lawmakers to make changes to the charter school law.

The effort was organized by MarylandCAN, the Maryland Campaign for Achievement Now.

While we must certainly congratulate Maryland for once again achieving the nation's best performance on AP exams for the seventh year in a row, we must still acknowledge how far we have to go.

With heavy hearts, many of us reported back to work and school Monday after witnessing the aftermath of unthinkable tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary. So many questions remain unanswered. So much healing remains ahead. So much has been lost.

Our neighbors in Connecticut need our support during this trying time, so let’s stand with them however we can....

As a parent, I want the best for my son. So when he wasn’t getting what he needed at our neighborhood school, I entered him in the lottery for a shot at attending Chesapeake Public Charter School. Against all odds, he won, and now he’s thriving. But other children in our state aren’t so lucky.
