Ten years after Maryland's charter school law was enacted, more than 200 student, parents and teachers from charter schools around the state were in Annapolis today to urge lawmakers to make changes to the charter school law.

The effort was organized by MarylandCAN, the Maryland Campaign for Achievement Now.

Over the past few days, articles, blogs and other posts have highlighted the achievements of Maryland’s students when it comes to Advanced Placement exams. While we must certainly congratulate Maryland for once again achieving the nation's best performance on AP exams for the seventh year in a row, we must still acknowledge how far we have to go.

As our country embarks on another phase in the path to ensuring we all have an opportunity to pursue the American dream, our state must too move forward. We must think about how we give all Marylanders, especially our children, opportunities to lay the foundation for their dreams. With the publishing of Maryland High School Assessment (HSA) scores, we can clearly see that while many students are forging ahead in Maryland, there remains a need to move quickly to close our achievement gap.
